About Gondola Rides in Venice

Why this site exists

Search for a gondola ride and you get essays about romance and a price quoted without a unit. The unit is the whole story. The Comune di Venezia sets one fare for the boat; the booking platforms sell seats in it, and three listings marketed as private are priced per person, which quietly doubles the bill for a couple.

None of that is hidden. The fare is published by the city, the units are printed above every calendar, and the seating rules are in the operators' own small print. Putting them next to each other is the entire job of this site.

Where the facts come from

The fare, the passenger limit, the list of stazi, the traghetto crossings and the rules about displaying the tariff come from the Comune di Venezia's own transport pages and from the municipal regulation governing the public gondola service. Where the city publishes a figure, we use the city's figure and not a blog's paraphrase of it.

Listing prices, price units, ratings, review counts, durations, inclusions and cancellation terms are read from each operator's own product page, in US dollars, and re-checked quarterly. Review quotes carry the reviewer's first name and country exactly as published; we do not write testimonials.

Where an operator states something inconvenient in its own words, such as the warning that random seating will not keep your party in the same gondola, or that the ride may run shorter when the canals are busy, we quote it rather than smooth it over.

What we do not do

We do not inspect boats, ride every listing, meet the gondoliers or audit anybody's safety record. Judging whether the water is safe on a given morning takes someone standing beside it, and that is the operator's job and the city's.

We also do not take your booking. Every Check Availability button sends you to the platform the operator sells on, where the price, the terms and the cancellation window are theirs.

How the site pays for itself

Links to rides on this site are affiliate links. If you book through one, the platform pays a commission and you pay the same price you would pay going there directly.

That pays for the research and nothing else. It does not decide which listings appear, what order they sit in, or what we say about them — and it is worth being plain about the obvious tension here: the most profitable outcome for this site would be to say nothing about walking up to a stazio and paying the fare in cash, which earns us exactly zero. It is on the homepage anyway, with the arithmetic attached.

Corrections

Fares are set by resolution and can change, crossings close, and prices move. If something here is out of date, write to us and say what you found and when you were there. We would rather fix a number than defend it.
